Drink Up!

Whether it's coffee, cocoa, tea or toddy, almost nothing is as soothing on a cold winter day than a warm drink! What's even better, though, is when we can have that tasty cup while adding nutrition that will strengthen our bodies for the cold months as well.

We've put together three recipes that you're sure to find delicious and nutritious this winter!

Anti-Inflammatory Hot Toddy:

During the winter months, it is more important than ever to boost our immune systems, and reduce inflammation in the body. This toddy is a power-house of ingredients that will do just that!

Ingredient Highlights:

  • Ginger: strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, ginger has shown to enhance the immune response, especially when it comes to respiratory infections.

  • Honey: used medicinally for centuries, honey has potent anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties to protect against disease.

  • Cinnamon: boasts anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to help your body fight off infection. It is also a great anti-inflammatory as it regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines in the body.

  • Lemon: Will add some vitamin C and extra flavor to your drink.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

2 cups water

1 1/2 inch ginger root, thinly sliced

4 to 6 cloves

1 cinnamon stick

1 lemon, halved

Honey to taste

Directions:

In a medium saucepan, add water, ginger root cinnamon stick and cloves.

Squeeze in the juice of the lemon and add lemon halves into the water.

Bring to a boil over high heat, and then reduce to medium heat, so the liquid is bubbling. Simmer for about 10min. Strain, removing cloves, lemon halves and ginger

from the liquid. Pour into two mugs and add honey to taste!

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Sometime, you just want some good, old fashioned hot chocolate! Luckily, we have a great recipe for a cozy mug that will also protect your body this winter!

Ingredient Highlights:

  • Pure chocolate contains flavonoids. Flavonoids have several beneficial effects for the body. They act as antioxidants, which protect cells from damage that leads to disease. They also contain anti-inflammatory properties, which is important for all aspects of health.

  • Pure peppermint extract is refreshing and soothing, and complements the flavor of chocolate well.

  • NOTE: For some added nutrition, try stirring in a serving of collagen peptides, which will add some protein, and support for skin, and joints.

Recipe:

  • 1 cup canned, light coconut milk

  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened non-dairy milk of choice

  • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/8 tsp pure peppermint extract

  • 2 Tbsp raw cocoa powder

  • Pinch of sea salt

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat (do not boil).

Simmer until ingredients are hot and thoroughly mixed and dissolve(about 5min).

Serve with garnish of choice: a dusting of cocoa powder; cocoa nibs; or whipped cream.
